5 Easy Ways To Improve Curb Appeal

I take pride in the up keep of my home. I want it to be welcoming and that all starts with curb appeal. When we bought our home it had zero curb appeal. Actually when you looked at it the first word to come to mind was "gross" but we saw potential. After a little elbow grease and some TLC we got the curb appeal we imagined. Here's a quick list of easy, low cost ways to improve your homes curb appeal.

1. TIDY UP

That old dead plant you've left in the flower bed for the past year. The weeds that seem to be bigger than half the other vegetation. Its time to tidy it up! Pull the weeds. Trim the over grown trees and shrubs. Remove and replace the old dead plants. Put down a fresh load of mulch. Just some fresh mulch can really go a long way in improving curb appeal. Maybe even add some nice big rocks to your flower bed. If your asking your self, flower bed... what flower bed? Well maybe you should think about adding some plants to the front of your home. A bare house is a lonely house and a lonely house has no curb appeal.

2. Update The Garage Door

Most garage doors take up 40 percent of the front of the house. If you want to add some curb appeal update the single largest focal point on the house, the garage door. Maybe it needs a fresh coat of paint or maybe just a good cleaning. But if you really want to add some flavor, grab a garage door hinge and handle set at your local hardware store. They come in all different sizes and styles. The best part of this update is the price, most sets are less than $50. Oh! And they are magnetic so you literally just stick them where you want and easily move them around to get the best look. How simple is that.

3. Lighting

The curb appeal of your home matters at night too. I hate it when I see a beautiful home with no lighting, such a waste. Show that thing off people. Light it up! If you have a nice shaped tree shine a spot light up it. I love the look of the accent lighting on the trees. Not only does it add light to the house but it also highlights the greenery. Update your light fixtures, this also looks nice when the sun comes up. Install some landscape lights to light pathways. I used to not be a fan of the solar lights for landscaping. They all just seemed a little cheap looking to me. But the technology has come a long way and you can find some nice, good sized ones that put off great light. It sure beats running all the wires for the traditional landscape lights.

4. Add Potted Plants

A beautiful pot with a great plant arrangement can really improve curb appeal. Some hanging baskets on the porch can be a good addition also. You can use them to add a nice pop of color or some extra greenery. Be careful though pots and hanging baskets can easily go from classy to gaudy so keep it to a minimum.

5. Keep It Clean

More than likely your drive way is dirty and the down spouts have a build up of mold underneath. Its easy to over look the dirt when you see it everyday. It would go a long way in the look of your home to give the exterior a good pressure washing. If your interested in DIY pressure washing I wrote a post on that. You can check it out here.
